With more than a million people, Brisbane is Australia’s third-largest city and the capital of Queensland. It is the ideal base for exploration of the southern part of the state. Brisbane spreads over both banks of the Brisbane River, 20 miles upstream from the river’s outlet into Moreton Bay. A bustling river traffic brings ferries, tugboats, freighters, ocean liners and pleasure craft to Brisbane’s busy port.

The center of Brisbane occupies a peninsula bounded by the sea on one side and the Brisbane River on the other. The river meanders through the city in deep, graceful curves. Gardens, parklands and flowering trees border the city’s avenues. The parliament buildings and the Botanic Gardens nestle in a bend of the river at the tip of the peninsula. The south river bank was the site of Expo 88 with the theme "Leisure in the Age of Technology." Indeed, leisure activities are much favored in and around this subtropical city. Beaches lure residents and visitors alike to the Sunshine Coast north and the Gold Coast south of Brisbane. In the foothills of the Taylor and D’Aguilar ranges, rising behind and a little to the west of the city, some of Australia’s most beautiful homes have been designed and built taking advantage of the setting and tropical surroundings.

Like most state capitals, Brisbane has its share of fine parks, museums, dignified government and civic buildings, and monuments. Most notable among the architectural landmarks is City Hall. The mammoth building is one of Brisbane’s showplaces. There is a good overall view of the city and surrounding countryside from its observation platform at the top of the clock tower. City Plaza, an impressive complex of specialty shops and open-air cafés opening onto plazas and courtyards, is in the heart of Brisbane next to City Hall. There is plenty to see and explore around the city center. Excursions into Brisbane’s environs include such favorites as the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, the Mount Coot-tha Forest Park and the Moreton Bay district.

Shopping Brisbane’s main shopping area is bounded by Elizabeth, Edward, Adelaide and George streets. Here you will find arcades, specialty shops, boutiques and major department stores. A traffic-free pedestrian mall stretches along Queen Street. Best buys include resort wear and the usual Australian souvenirs, ranging from boomerangs to stuffed toy koalas. The local currency is the Australian dollar.

Cuisine A wide range of ethnic restaurants are available in Brisbane. Local specialties include Queensland mudcrab, Moreton Bay bugs (a kind of crayfish cooked and served in the shell), fresh seafood from the Great Barrier Reef and beef from central Queensland. One of the premium local beers is Castlemaine.

Other Sights
John Oxley Memorial -- This obelisk between Victoria and William Jolly bridges marks the spot where Lt. John Oxley landed in 1823, establishing the site of Brisbane.

Newstead Park -- Brisbane’s oldest residence, Newstead House, stands here. There is also a memorial at Lyndon B. Johnson Place, erected by the people of Queensland as a tribute to the United States.

Miegunyah -- This fine example of colonial architecture memorializes Australia’s pioneer women. It is furnished in the manner of the late 1800s and holds many relics of those early days.

Queensland Art Gallery -- Although small, the gallery offers a fine collection of works by Australian contemporary painters.
